For many women, having a vaginal yeast infection is still somewhat of a taboo. This is quite strange since most women also know very well that a yeast infection often has no unhygienic reason. You can get a fungal infection from taking antibiotics.

Every body has fungi, but not every fungus becomes an infection. When it starts to form yeast or fungal threads, we call it a fungal infection.

What is a vaginal yeast infection, how do you recognize it and what can you do about it? You can read this and more below.

What is a vaginal yeast infection and how do you recognize it?

4 out of 5 women will experience a fungal infection at least once. Different microorganisms live in the vagina of every woman. As long as these have a good balance, your vagina is healthy. If the balance is disturbed by, for example, a fungus such as Candida, we call it a vaginal fungal infection.

You can recognize a vaginal yeast infection by several symptoms. This may include vaginal itching and abnormal (crumbly) discharge. Pain may also occur during urination and/or sex. Vaginal yeast infections are not contagious and/or transmissible.

What can you do yourself about a fungal infection?

Take care of your vagina as best as possible to prevent a yeast infection. Take the PH value of your vagina into account. It is important not to irritate the vagina and therefore not to use soap to wash the vagina.

The use of products such as yogurt, probiotics and garlic is certainly not recommended!

Lastly, it is important to take the time to become aroused during intercourse. Use a lubricant if necessary.

If you have contracted a vaginal fungal infection despite proper care, you can easily solve it yourself. Various medications are available to combat a vaginal yeast infection.

What can a pharmacist do about a fungal infection?

Your local pharmacist can help you with a fungal infection. He or she will first ask you a number of questions in order to provide you with the best possible advice. If necessary, your pharmacist will refer you to your own GP for additional advice and/or medication.

For vaginal yeast infections, you can also buy medication online, or buy medication without a prescription at a drugstore. For example, consider Clotrimazole, which is available in tablet and cream form.

Medication against vaginal yeast infections

There are several types of medication available to combat a fungal infection. For example, you can opt for a tablet or a cream. Both work equally well, but the advantage of a tablet is that it only needs to be used once. However, a tablet does not provide immediate relief against complaints such as itching. Medication in the form of a cream works almost immediately against the itching. This is usually used for about 6 days and relieves most complaints after about 2 days of use.

Suitable medications for vaginal yeast infection:

Gyno-Daktarin
Diflucan
Itraconazole
