Bekijk alle detailsNowadays there are various options for contraception. However, the best-known option offered in this area is still the pill. The pill or the so-called combination pill can be easily taken and offers excellent protection against an unwanted pregnancy. However, many ladies still have a number of questions regarding this form of contraception. Does that also apply to you? Then these questions will probably be answered with the information below.
In practice, the contraceptive pill is often referred to as the so-called combination pill. This is the result of the fact that it actually consists of two different hormones, namely:
The combined pill is used to prevent pregnancy. Ladies who want to take the combination pill for the first time should take into account that they need a prescription from their GP.
As already indicated above, the combination pill consists of two different types of hormones. Each hormone has its own effect on the body. First of all there is the progestin hormone. This prevents you from becoming pregnant by:
Then there is also the presence of the estrogen hormone. The main function of this is to ensure that you have regular periods. The combination pill is generally known to provide excellent protection against an unwanted pregnancy. Of the thousand women who take this pill, only four per year still become pregnant. Please note, is the combination pill forgotten at some point? Then there is a chance of becoming pregnant again. In that case, the emergency pill may still offer a solution.
One combination pill is not the same as the other. In the majority of cases, it can be established that general practitioners recommend a combination pill with levonorgestrel 150 micrograms and ethinylestradiol 30 micrograms. The reason why this combination pill is most often prescribed is that it is known to have the least chance of side effects. However, there are other options available on the market.
For example, a GP can also opt for a pill consisting of gestodene 75 micrograms and ethinyl estradiol 20 micrograms. The combination pill with ethinylestradiol 20 micrograms logically contains much fewer hormones. The other side of the coin, however, is that there is a greater chance of irregular blood loss.
The main disadvantage of the combination pill is that you can forget to take it. In addition, it is also possible that diarrhea or vomiting can influence the effectiveness of the pill. In that case, caution is advised because you are less well protected against an unwanted pregnancy. Have you forgotten to take the pill and did you notice this within 12 hours after you were supposed to take the pill? Then you can still take them. The next pill is then taken at the normal time. This way you still remain well protected. Is it longer than 12 hours after you should have taken the pill? Then you are less well protected. If you have had sexual intercourse within this period, the use of an emergency pill may be recommended.
