What is a contraceptive ring?

A contraceptive ring is therefore a flexible and also soft ring that is inserted into the woman's vagina. Once inserted, she will release two female hormones into the blood. This concerns the hormones etonogestrel and ethinylestradiol. Actually, this form of contraception works in the same way as the contraceptive pill. However, it is true that no daily intake of a pill is required.

Instead, the ring that is inserted vaginally must be left in place for three weeks. This ensures that the lady in question actually only has to think about her contraception once a month. Characteristic of the contraceptive ring is that it is known to be a low-dose hormonal contraceptive. This is of course the result of the lower dose of hormones released by this form of contraception.

How should you use the contraceptive ring?

Many ladies suspect that they will need to visit a GP or other doctor before inserting the ring. That is not the case. You can therefore insert the contraceptive ring yourself without any problems. This also applies to removing the ring again. Inserting the ring is actually done in exactly the same way as inserting a tampon. Before you put this in, it is always important to pay close attention to the expiration date. In addition, always wash your hands thoroughly first and insert the ring into the vagina by squeezing them between your thumb and index finger. This can most easily be done when you sit on a chair or stool with one leg raised.

Once inserted, the ring will mold to the contours of your vaginal wall. It is recommended to regularly check whether the ring is still properly in place. In particular, this should be done before and after each sexual intercourse. Only in this way can you count on being really well protected against a possible pregnancy. A new ring must be inserted every month. After a period of three weeks, the ring must be removed. You should not immediately place a new one. In this way, it is ensured that the stop week can take place. Menstruation should start during this week. After a ring-free week, a new ring must be inserted.

Are there any side effects to be aware of?

It is possible that the contraceptive ring can cause certain side effects. However, it goes without saying that not everyone has to deal with this in practice. Some typical side effects you may experience are an increase in body weight, headaches or migraines, abdominal pain and nausea, acne as well as sore breasts, pelvic pain and painful periods. Less desire to have sex can also be a side effect of the contraceptive ring.
