Many people will be affected by eczema at some point during their lives. These are red spots that appear on the skin. Not only can these spots be quite itchy, they can also develop flakes or scabs. This skin condition can occur in both children and adults. In both cases, more or less the same regulations apply. Would you also like to find out more about eczema and what exactly you can do about it? The information on this page tells you all about it!

How do I recognize eczema?

Eczema involves red spots that appear on the skin. Not only can these spots itch severely, but additional peripheral issues can also arise, such as:

  • Scales;
  • Bumps;
  • Fissures;
  • Crusts;

What many people don't know is that eczema can manifest itself in different ways. For example, it is possible that you are confronted with eczema due to hereditary predisposition. In this case it is usually located:

  • On the inside of the elbows;
  • In the back of the knees;
  • In the neck;
  • On the ankles;
  • Around the eyes;

You can get this form of eczema at a relatively young age. Other forms of eczema include blisters on the palms, round spots that can form as well as eczema that occurs on the lower legs.

Can I do something about it myself?

There are many different things you can take into account when you are plagued by eczema. At first you should not scratch it. Scratching can make both the eczema and itching worse. It is also important to pay attention to the fact that things such as water and soap dry out the skin. The result of this is that the skin becomes more sensitive and therefore more itchy. Some tips that you can take into account in this area are:

  1. Don't take a bath or shower too often;
  2. Make sure the water is not too hot;
  3. Don't wash for too long;

Taking a bath or shower is only recommended two to three times a week for eczema. It is preferable to also wear more loose-fitting clothing. It is also recommended to use clothing made of cotton and not, for example, wool.

How is eczema treated?

Eczema is treated in different ways in practice. Initially, a cream or ointment will be prescribed that softens and protects the skin. This could, for example, be:

  • Cetomacrogol ointment;
  • Lanette cream;

You may also choose to prescribe a cream or ointment with hormones. If a certain treatment has been suggested by your doctor, it is always recommended to schedule a new visit to the doctor after one or two weeks. This way he or she has the opportunity to check whether there has been an improvement or not. The prescribed treatment can then be adjusted accordingly if necessary.
